Social Impact of Santo Tomás University

The dimension of Santo Tomás University social impact merges with the learning and teaching as well as research processes. It is the interaction with other sectors of the society to solve problems in order to learn and take such learning into the context of the transformation and management of the University itself, understood as an entity of knowledge. The objective of the social impact is to establish and enable permanent processes of interaction, correspondence and integration among the diverse social and community actors, aiming at the socio-cultural transformation, peaceful coexistence and social justice by means of the knowledge transfer or extension.

The principles and perspectives of the social impact of Santo Tomás University are:

Service: understood as the founding demand that recognizes in the other an opportunity to identify one’s own life project and that enables to the other the construction of their own.

Justice: Thomistic social ethics and philosophy lead somehow to justice, oriented to achieve the common wealth with equity, in order to overcome inequality, imbalances and social exclusions.

Commitment and Solidarity: understood as “facing” the other, the community and the dimension of the environment,
and expressing it in terms of concrete actions supported by personal and professional skills.

Transcendence: the professional execution does not deplete in their own limits; it has a wider cultural impact that should be considered in advance during the formative process, so that the professionals that are given to the society have a generous and wide sense of the human condition as well as of the science itself.

Community development: the academic community makes social intervention in order to propose and create projects
into a real framework for applying the knowledge, whose result leads to offering alternative solutions to defined and
prioritized problems and needs.

The community development works with a participative model in which the community gets involved in projects, from the diagnostic stage to the planning and execution of a development plan. In such a way, a high level of commitment is guaranteed and it is understood that activities to be done are in direct correspondence with their needs and interests. For the university, the model brings a permanent feedback of curricula so that they can be oriented towards the local, national and international realities.
