Social Impact

This dimension is integrated with the teaching-learning and research processes. It is the interaction with other sectors of society to contribute to the solution of problems, to learn and to carry this learning in function of the transformation in the organization and the management of the University, understood as an entity of knowledge. Its purpose is to establish permanent processes of interaction, correspondence and integration among the diverse social and community stakeholders towards socio-cultural transformations, coexistence and social justice through the transfer or extension of knowledge.

Principles and perspectives of the social impact of Universidad Santo Tomás

Service: essential requirement that recognizes in others an opportunity to identify one’s own life project and that enables others to build their own.

Justice: Thomist social ethics and philosophy lead somehow to justice. It is oriented towards achieving the common wealth with equity; seeking to overcome inequality, imbalances and exclusions from society.

Commitment and Solidarity: understood as “facing” the other, the community, and the dimension of the environment, expressed in terms of concrete actions supported by personal and professional skills.

Transcendence:  Professional practice is not exhausted within the limits of itself, but has a cultural impact of greater coverage that must be considered in advance during the formative process, in such a way as to present professionals with a generous and broad sense of the human and the science to society.

Community development: the academic community carries social intervention out in order to propose and create projects into a real framework for applying knowledge. As a result, it leads to offering alternative solutions to defined and prioritized problems and needs. The community development works with a participative model in which the community gets involved in projects, from the diagnostics stage to the planning and execution of a work plan. This way, a high level of commitment is guaranteed and it is understood that activities to be done are in direct correspondence with the community’s needs and interests. Likewise, the model brings a permanent feedback for the University of its curricula so that they can be oriented towards the local, national and international realities.
